VPN technology was not designed to offer privacy so much as to offer a more secure way to connect to an organization’s internal network infrastructure via untrusted networks. A better way to protect data in transit is to use object based security where the application itself encrypt the data, not only relying on protecting the communication channel. But, if privacy and anonymity is what you are after, that is hard to achieve without using technologies like TOR.
