The Smart City platforms need to be able to communicate securely over public networks, extracting data and statistics but still keeping the infrastructure secure and the people living there privacy protected. The amount of damage that could be done by a hacker has been illustrated in many movies. Take a hack of traffic lights and or the water system. Communication also has to be designed for a centralized setup with servers and control centers, but also point2point between, for instance, cars and the environment it travels through.
This challenge requires new thinking in how to secure communication, like the object security model provided by apptimate.io.
