Any connected device is a potential attack vector. And by the sheer number of new connected goods, printers, wearables, TVs, thermostats, etc you must now consider that your peripheral security walls have more holes than swiss cheese. The idea of a private network is more or less an illusion, and the old security methods are outdated.

It’s not enough to secure the device or “pipe”. You have to secure the data and the access by at-rest and in-transfer encryption, strong multi-factor authentication mechanisms, etc. New technology is already available in the market.
